The evolution of these systems reflects the development of human understanding in ancient Indian civilization.<\/p><p>The Sanskrit word <em>Darshana<\/em> means &#8220;direct perception,&#8221; &#8220;intuition,&#8221; or &#8220;inspiration,&#8221; but it is also used to signify &#8220;insight&#8221; or &#8220;vision.&#8221; These schools aim to understand the ultimate truth behind existence and all creation.<\/p><p>The foundational ideas of these systems were established by wise sages (<em>Rishis<\/em>), each offering a different yet complementary view of a single truth. Their teachings guide individuals in ethical living and self-purification to help them unite their individual soul (<em>Atman<\/em>) with the cosmic soul (<em>Brahman<\/em>).<\/p><p>The six classical schools and their founders are:<\/p><ol><li><p><strong>Sankhya<\/strong> \u2013 Founded by <strong>Kapila<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Yoga<\/strong> \u2013 Systematized by <strong>Patanjali<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Purva Mimamsa<\/strong> \u2013 Founded by <strong>Jaimini<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Vedanta<\/strong> \u2013 Developed by <strong>Vyasa<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Vaisheshika<\/strong> \u2013 Founded by <strong>Kanada<\/strong><\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Nyaya<\/strong> \u2013 Founded by <strong>Gautama<\/strong><\/p><\/li><\/ol><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sankhya School<\/span><\/h3><p>The term <em>Sankhya<\/em> means &#8220;enumeration.&#8221; This dualistic school explores the hierarchy of existence and the descent of spirit into matter.<\/p><p>It is based on the distinction between <strong>Purusha<\/strong> (consciousness) and <strong>Prakriti<\/strong> (matter). Prakriti is the source of all material phenomena and is composed of three essential qualities (gunas):<\/p><ol><li><p><strong>Sattva<\/strong> (purity\/intelligence)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Rajas<\/strong> (activity\/motion)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Tamas<\/strong> (inertia\/darkness)<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p>Prakriti transforms under the influence of these gunas, while Purusha remains a detached observer. Liberation (<em>Moksha<\/em>) occurs when the self realizes its distinction from matter and transcends the influence of the gunas.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yoga School<\/span><\/h3><p><em>Yoga<\/em> means &#8220;union&#8221; or &#8220;discipline.&#8221; It focuses on the ascent of the spirit and liberation from material bondage through inner control.<\/p><p>Yoga emphasizes practical methods\u2014self-discipline, ethical living, breath control, and meditation\u2014to calm the restless mind and awaken spiritual consciousness.<\/p><p>According to Yoga philosophy, the mind functions in five states:<\/p><ol><li><p>Right knowledge<\/p><\/li><li><p>Misconception<\/p><\/li><li><p>Imagination<\/p><\/li><li><p>Sleep<\/p><\/li><li><p>Memory<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p>The ultimate goal of yoga is to cease these mental fluctuations and realize the pure self.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Purva Mimamsa School<\/span><\/h3><p><em>Mimamsa<\/em> means &#8220;inquiry&#8221; or &#8220;investigation.&#8221; It is concerned with the duties and rituals outlined in the early Vedas.<\/p><p>This school regards liberation as attaining a heavenly afterlife through proper ritual actions. It emphasizes dharma (duty) and sees the soul as eternal but distinct from the body and senses. Liberation is achieved through performance of Vedic duties, mantras, and sacred sounds.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vedanta School<\/span><\/h3><p><em>Vedanta<\/em> means &#8220;the end or culmination of the Vedas.&#8221; It focuses on non-dualism (<em>Advaita<\/em>) and the realization of Brahman, the ultimate reality.<\/p><p>Vedanta holds that Brahman is omnipresent, and the perception of multiplicity is due to ignorance (<em>Avidya<\/em>). The individual soul (<em>Atman<\/em>) is essentially identical with Brahman.<\/p><p>The Atman is covered by five sheaths (<em>Kosha<\/em>):<\/p><ol><li><p><strong>Annamaya<\/strong> (physical body)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Pranamaya<\/strong> (vital breath)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Manomaya<\/strong> (mind\/emotions)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Vijnanamaya<\/strong> (intellect)<\/p><\/li><li><p><strong>Anandamaya<\/strong> (bliss)<\/p><\/li><\/ol><p>Spiritual evolution occurs through transcending these layers to experience <em>Turiya<\/em>, the fourth state of consciousness beyond waking, dreaming, and deep sleep.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Vaisheshika School<\/span><\/h3><p><em>Vaisheshika<\/em> means &#8220;distinction.&#8221; This atomistic school categorizes reality based on the unique characteristics of substances.<\/p><p>It teaches that all objects are made of indivisible atoms of earth, water, fire, air, and ether. These combine to form the material world.
